In ancient Greece all the arts were developed to extremely high levels
Music was no exception. It went hand in hand with architecture, sculpture and theatre, for the Hellenic music was not just the art of putting sounds together. To the ancient Greeks the concept of music embraced all intellectual quests and their expression through the arts which were protected by the Muses. Harmony, movement, poetry and philosophy were One, so that music, dance and poetry were initially inseparable arts. The great "composers" were also great poets. It was not until after the 4th century BC that music began to have an independent existence, with the first "virtuosi" giving concerts and recitals.

And where did all this begin? On the Olympus of course. The Hellenes, with their custom of attributing human traits to the gods and then borrowing them back clothed in divine lustre, gave the lyre to Apollo, the flute to Athena, poetry, dance and music to the Muses.
Needless to say, the gods could not keep their art to themselves for very long. The demigods were the first to obtain music and musical instruments. The goddess Athena tossed her flute aside in disgust when she looked at her reflection in a pool and saw her distorted cheeks. The satyr Margias picked it up and learned to play it so well that he challenged Apollo to a contest with his lyre.

Corfu has very colourful carnival parades, the third best in Greece. They used to be the best in Greece and not far behind Venician ones.
And how about our evening stroll at the Liston? After 8:00 all the locals get there in their good outfits and look for friends, old or new. They never stay home, never.
