KERKYRA
TOWN
Kerkyra is like a walk through history. We could begin at the remnants of the
ancient city of Kerkyra founded in the 7th century BC and then follow the history
with Roman and Byzantine monuments. The old fortress built in the 7th century
BC by the Byzantines and the new fortress completed in 1576 by the Venetians
helped protect the island against invaders.
The town of Kerkyra has a unique architecture influenced by a mix of European
cultures. You could mistake it for Paris, Venice or London. The arcades around
the Liston were designed by a Frenchman Mattieu de Lesseps in 1807 and pay tribute
to Paris. Venetian aristocratic buildings, up to four storeys high, looked like
skyscrapers when they were built. Many public monuments and statues were created
by the British during the period of their fifty-year rule.
