Great climate, clean beaches with crystal clear water,
ancient
monuments, magnificent landscapes, picturesque villages,
tavernas with great traditional food and entertainment
all contributed to the increase in the tourist inflow.
So the tourist rush started bringing the need for accommodation and entertainment near the beach, because the tourist
agents would not rent houses unless they were close to the beach.
Suddenly the worthless blocks on the beach front became a gold mine.
A quick uncontrolled development started and the self contained type of accommodation was introduced.
Some old stone houses in beautiful villages dating back many centuries like Makrades from 8th century AD that have
survived many inventions and disasters and were still in good order and occupied till the 1980's have been left
to sit idle: roofs are falling in with walls to follow soon after. These historic buildings that should be treated
like treasures are slowly disappearing. Would you like to help turn things around for an entire community &
at the same time have a holidaty house fo less than half of the price it would cost to build? Click HERE
The new mayor of St. George council Spyros Aspiotis recognises the need for the correct distribution of tourism
and the survival of the old villages.
