Corfu The Dream IslandThe mythical island of Corfu and its beautiful old stone buildings in picturesque Byzantine and Medieval villages were build on the mountains and the hills and fortresses were build around them to avoid invaders including pirates and the Ottoman Empire.

The main source of income used to be agriculture - olives, grapes, corn, etc, and the land close to the sandy beaches was considered of no value because it could not be used for agricultural purposes. Often it was given for dowry to daughters or sisters and was then sold for a couple of tins of oil. Then in the 1980's Corfu became famous and popular with tourists.

So the tourist rush started bringing the need for accommodation and entertainment near the beach, because the tourist agents would not rent houses unless they were close to the beach.

Suddenly the worthless blocks on the
beach front became a gold mine. A quick uncontrolled development started and the self contained type of accommodation was introduced.

Some old stone houses in beautiful villages dating back many centuries like Makrades from 8th century AD that have survived many inventions and disasters and were still in good order and occupied till the 1980's have been left to sit idle: roofs are falling in with walls to follow soon after. These historic buildings that should be treated like treasures are slowly disappearing. The new mayor of St. George council Spyros Aspiotis recognises the need for the correct distribution of tourism and the survival of the old villages.
