The
Achilleon Palace was built in the 1800's for the Empress Elizabeth of Austria.
Legends say that Achilles was dipped into the sacred river Styx by his mother
Thetis after birth, making him invulnerable. As Greece's mightiest warrior, he
died in Troy, killed by Paris's arrow that struck him in the heel. Like her hero,
Empress Elizabeth was also vulnerable to illness. Kerkyra's gentle climate seemed
to help her health and the majestic gardens of the Palace were said to comfort
her a lot.
